All my cartridges still save, except for Sonic 3, I think, because it lost its saves.
Open the cartridge, take the battery to a store that sells batteries, say you need the same kind, pop it in your cartridge, close it, and tadaa! You're good for another 10-15 years.
Cartridges use batteries to keep a small RAM powered, that contains the save data. If it's not powered anymore, the RAM loses all its data, just like on computer's RAM when you shut down your computer.
[Edit by Benoit on [TIME]1090859060[/TIME]]

Well lots of cartridges have funny screws, so they're a pain to open. But you can actually order the screw kits to open cartridges.

If I'm not mistaken, you need a Technician's Screwdriver. I believe those same screws are on a GBA...a spring collapsed in my directional pad, so it's hard to move right, and I was going to take it apart to replace the spring, but I didn't have the correct screwdriver. It's probably best left to Nintendo, anyway.

Actually exchanging batteries doesn't have to be all so much of a deal.
Open up your cart, locate the battery. Check if it's soldered (probably is). Use a soldering gun to remove the battery. You could probably find a replacement battery in a store which sells various batteries. They aren't very expensive. Solder the new battery back into place. Voilá! Your game is as good as new.
However, if you can't find a replacement battery, just try to find one with the same voltage and put your old one together with the new one (+side against +side) for a few minutes, and you old battery should be recharged. Put it back into your cart and it should work just as good as a new one.
Oh and by the way, for opening carts...you can open them by using regular tools (with a little force) and then exchange the screws with standard shaped ones.

[Edit by DaveGeorge on [TIME]1091016593[/TIME]]

Does messing with the battery (whether it be taking it out or do that + sides thing mentioned above) wipe the saved data?

You don't have to replace your battery when it still works. That's useless, and just makes you lose your data.
But if your battery is empty, your data is gone either way. The RAM that contains the data isn't under power anymore, so the data is lost. Replace the battery, and then it'll save normally again.
In other words, you will lose your LV 40+ group over time anyway, when the battery dies.

I have a hacked save on Genecyst where I'm taking Alys to The Edge. (@) It just stops me from using them in my Genesis and Nomad, that's all... ;) (And I'm trying to get my BF into Phantasy Star too... ;)... So I'm trying to find out how to fix cart batteries so he'll buy one offa E-bay. ) (@)

My high level Alys party and my 90s level party at the Edge! !@#$ Maybe I should write down the stats and *cough* transfer all that to one of my emus...
Wouldn't changing the battery also elimate your ability to view Sound Test in IV because I read somewhere that if you delete the finished save data after activating it, you can't access it anymore.

I see. So what do you prefer over the other?
EDIT: Oh! That's another reason I prefer GENS over Genecyst! (unless I'm mistaken) The Genecyst has horrible sound quality. The BGM sounds alot like a duck sining something. %) The GENS, on the other hand, has BGM that sounds almost exactally the same as the Genesis.
[Edit by Prince Noah on [TIME]1092512868[/TIME]]

Maybe it's just my sound card or something but, sometimes Genecyst sounds perfect, but it sometimes sounds real crappy and bounces between the two extremes while I'm playing. With me, Gens sounds sorta...metallic... I have no idea how to describe it, but several of the songs, especially Laughter and a few others, come out terrible... *sniff sniff* And with Genecyst I have a saved game editor, and that's how I've fulfilled my wish of so many years of being able to take Alys to The Edge. :)
(For years I couldn't use Genecyst because I couldn't figure out how to make it work with the keyboard, but someone at Gaia Online explained it to me.
(@) )

[Edit by AlysBrangwin on [TIME]1092513641[/TIME]]
