Anyone ever beat Re-Faze?

Postby etony33 » Tue Jan 31, 2017 3:11 am

I'm going to give it a try. Re-Faze has 32767 HP. With Chaz at level 99, he does just over 400 damage with Rayblade, and just under it with his regular attack (after using the Power Shield). With luck (read: tool assisted), he can get in three strikes before having to heal. This requires Megid to do the low end of damage (Chaz has 635 HP, so essentially, three hits of 210 damage each. It usually does more than that, though). So, three hits @ around 1175 means Chaz will need to heal (with Sol-Dew) 28 times. With the Power Shield, you can have up to 33 Sol Dews in your inventory (vehicles, Rykros Ring, Psycho Wand, and the Aeroprism take up the other slots)

If you actually attempt to do this, do us all a favor and record it. Show that Chaz is Lv99 and what equipment he has. Upload it to YouTube and you may very well be the first person to actually beat Re-Faze legitimately.

I don't think it is possible to be honest. Even if it was possible, it wouldn't happen legitimately. It would require a ton of save state abuse.

I believe it is impossible to actually beat Re-Faze even with save-state abuse and max stats. If I recall the code correctly, Re-Faze auto-heals himself to full HP after each round ends, and since 999 is the max damage you can deal to any enemy in one attack, it would be impossible.

Through the use of hacking I think it has been done and it ends up soft-locking the game IIRC, but legit I have never seen it done.

Heals himself after every round? Damn. That's too bad. Definitely not possible then.

The dead site Phantasy Star Curiosities covered this. The owner hacked the game so Chaz had way more HP than usual, and fought Re-Faze. It is possible to beat him, but you get 1 EXP and 1 Meseta for winning. Re-Faze disappears, and you don't learn Megid.

Right. I actually hacked the game to give Re-Faze 1 HP, and it was exactly like you said.

I did the same for Zio (first battle). Once you win the battle, it just progresses like it des normally.

Anyone who actually seriously sets out to beat Re-Faze is very much aware of these things.

As far as not learning Megid, if you are able to beat Re-Faze, you don't need Megid.

anything technically is possible through hacking. the programmers never code in anything to react to the event of a successful victory, thus nothing happens. much like the Army Eye fight in Phantasy Star II, except in that case it creates a soft-lock. Since Re-Faze is optional, it wouldn't matter.

Using hacking ? Why not...sure that it is a great way to have many modifications, hacks (I think about Hordes of Nei for Phantasy Star II by example !) or to permit some people to try to win versus foes you're normally not "permited" to kill ! :)

As far as not being permitted to kill a certain enemy, there's only (to my knowledge, anyway) Army Eye and Zio (the first time), in addition to (probably) Re-Faze.

It's tough, but you can win two other battles that you are "supposed" to lose, those being Saccubus in Phantasy Star and Neifirst with just Nei.

Oh, the Carnivorous Trees. Forgot them. I'm curious what would happen if you altered the code so that you could win that battle (I'm assuming either the game would freeze or that it would proceed as if you ran)

I have killed Succubus before... lots of grinding and wasting of Big Macs, not worth it in the end but it is possible.

As for the Carnivorous Trees, I believe if you did hack the code so that the trees just die instead of regenerate, the game would treat it as if you ran away as well.

Speaking of things you aren't supposed to do in boss battles, did you know that if you stun Iglanova in Phantasy Star IV (using Earth or similar), you can run away from the battle and trigger the cutscene as if you did beat it. It's a small speedrun strat that saves a bit of time, but Iglanova has to remained stunned by the start of the next turn in order to be able to run. This works for both battles, though in many cases if the Earth/Run strat doesn't work for the 2nd one, Crash usually takes care of it with a good chance of success. It is the ONLY boss you can do this with.

It's not possible to defeat Re-Faze in the vanilla game. Even if at level 99. had a sol-dew in every possible spot, and had the right equipment, you could get halfway through, but other than that, you'll likely need to use hacking cheats.

There's a hack called "Party Select" where you can select the party freely (I first saw it nearly 7 years ago and never once got to play it >>), so if everyone was at level 99 and you had the right party, you likely indeed could defeat Re-Faze... but I doubt a single meseta and experience point will be that satisfying.
