Complaints?

Postby Neo48 » Tue Apr 06, 2004 12:33 am

OK OK!! Here is the problem...It seems as if Benoit seems to care more about the story part of the game, how can i tell? Well character levels, i'm a higher level (my character could whomp his) and he knows twice as much about the game than i do. Benoit obviously doesn't need the excitement of becoming the strongest to enjoy the game. Zoothe seems to want the aspect of leveling tied into the story which is where the problem is. As from what i've seen you can do two things in the game. You can become a strong character and try to find the best weapon and become the strongest(ME). Or you can try to find out as much about the story as possible by searching every nook and crany of the game(Benoit) The game does not offer your character progress as the story progresses(Zoothe): you could stay in normal forest for the whole time and just level there, pointless but possible. The point i think Zoothe is trying to get across is character progress at the same rate as story progress, and what makes PSO so unique? Doing things at your own rate, like Benoit and I. If zoothe did not enjoy this kind of game style then so be it. And Benoit i'm not saying your not a high level, as before, at your own pace. Whether you choose story over level or level over story. Whatever you preffer for your own style of RPG is your choice. Thats what makes people unique. I could go on and on, but i think i'll see how feedback turns out. I may get applauded or slapped down. This is just my view on what I have gathered here.

[Edit by Neo48 on [TIME]1081211717[/TIME]]

Neo48, I agree with you.
Benoit, I *did* give PSO a chance (all be it, a limited chance considering I never played online), and that's the point. Have you ever walked out of a movie because you didn't like it? Some pople can do that. I did it with "City of Angels" and *would* have done it with "Jackie Brown" (but I was stuck there). Since I walked out of "City of Angels" I have never decided to rent it and see what I missed because I didn't care. It's the same for me and PSO: I played it, I didn't like it, I dropped it, and I'll probably never play it again.
I don't care anymore anyways, I *just* got my Swap Magic Discs and am now playing the PS remake!!! Oh heaven!!

It still further proves my theory that anyone who dislikes PSO does so for bad reasons.

Since this is the complaint topic, how bout this one: If every new hunter (hunter, ranger, force) is given a mag, then why are you the only hunter with a mag!?!? Every NPC is weak, plus I think there spells are also lvl 1. I think that was stupid as far as creating characters goes, their skill should reflect their level. I shouldn't be able to do more dmg than a level 190 Donoph with his Zanba sword.

HAha.. Now we get to why he really doesn't like PSO. WEAK NPC's..
LMAO, and he thinks other RPG npc's are more powerful?!
Every RPG has weak and strong chars..

IT? Your comment, zoothe.

I have never decided to rent it and see what I missed because I didn't care. It's the same for me and PSO: I played it, I didn't like it, I dropped it, and I'll probably never play it again.

You don't need a further explanation.

It's the same for me and PSO: I played it, I didn't like it, I dropped it, and I'll probably never play it again.

So what you're saying is that the fact that I didn't like the game in itself is the "bad" reason for not liking it? Get off it. Just because you don't agree with me doesn't make my resaons for not liking the game bad or wrong. I've never said you were wrong, just that I don't agree. You're getting lost in your obvious love for the game and seem unable to comprehend somone not liking it for *any* reasons. I give up trying to debate with someone like that. It's like trying to debate religion: pointless.

I'll try to make my point a bit more clear:
You come here, on the Phantasy Star Online forum, and start bashing the game. That in itself is a bad start.
Now let's look at your points.
First you say:

My biggest complaint is that the only thing that really makes PSO a "Phantasy Star game" is it's name!

Now, that's not true. I've repeatedly pointed what makes this game Phantasy Star. It's the unique mix of sci-fi and medieval aspects. You have humans, newmans and androids. You have Techniques. Then there's the whole story which is inspired by the story of Phantasy Star.
Phantasy Star is also innovation, and this title innovated by its "You're not the only hero." premise. You're cooperating with other players instead of fighting them. That, too, is innovation.

I look at PSO and see how new gamers getting into RPGs have no idea of what a real RPG is.

It is a real RPG. More real than the cinematic RPGs of today. An RPG is about role-playing your character, and living and learning a story. PSO fits that profile. There's also the fact that you're not really following a linear plot. You can make some decisions that will alter the storyline or change the outcome. The Kireek and Sue/Bernie subplots are great examples of this. You can also make choices in quests that affect the outcome.

I don't like the game because it isn't what *I* consider an RPG to be.

That's a very egotistical(right word?) remark there. A game doesn't have to suit what you define as a specific genre. Who's to say that what you describe is a real RPG?

I'm not going to try to define "RPG" and have you tell me how wrong I am. Like I said originally, I haven't played PSO all that much, nor to it's full potential. This is because it didn't saitsfy my expectaions of an RPG (let alone a Phantasy Star game).

So you didn't experience PSO to its full potential and yet you bash it as if you knew much about it. Oh please, stop that attitude. You don't know what you're talking about, you just proved it.

But from what you tell me, I can read all these little info pods and understand what has already happened. Oooh, that sounds fun to me! I'd rather progress a story on my own and watch the events unfold on my screen.

And what exactly is the difference between seeing an event and reading a message pod? There's no real difference that matters. An RPG also isn't really about seeing events unfolding all the time. It's about taking an active role in the story and not just watching it like a movie. There's the movie theater for that. This is a video game.
Besides, I already mentioned that it's not just message pods, but also quests where you see some events and interact with NPCs.

You seem to forget that I haven't played PSO all that much. I disliked it so I stopped playing it. All these things you're telling me about the game... a lot of it means nothing to me because I didn't dig that far into it.

Yet you still continue to bash the game like you knew it.

Benoit, I *did* give PSO a chance (all be it, a limited chance considering I never played online), and that's the point.

You didn't give it a fair chance, since you barely know the game. If you gave it a fair chance, you would know something about what we are talking about. Yet you don't and just dismiss it. So you have no real point.
And this is what I see way too often. People dismissing the game without having really tried it. Lame complaints like:
"It has no story" - Sure there's a story! The messages and quests together make one hell of a story. Persons who say this haven't bothered to read/play these and giving some thought to it.
"It's not Phantasy Star" - I've already described this above. The feel is Phantasy Star, and the elements are there.
"It's not Algol" - PSIII also didn't take place in Algol. Does that make it any less of a Phantasy Star game? Of course not. Phantasy Star doesn't have to take place in one specific location.
"It doesn't connect to the original games" - Again, what the problem? The feel and the elements are there. It doesn't need to connect.
So there you have it. Peace out.

It's just funny that you continue to drag this on. How is saying I didn't like the game "bashing" it. I came on here voicing my opinion (or complaints) about the game. I never asked you to tell me how I was wrong. You obviously know more (and care more) about the game than I do. Why? Because you've played it more than I ever will. I simply don't like the game. You guys asked me why and I told you. If you don't agree with me, fine. And it is so *not* egotistical for me to not like an RPG because it doesn't fit *my* definition of what an RPG is supposed to be. It'd be egotistical if I expected *you* to not like it based on *my* definition, which is not the case. And what's with name calling anyways? On more than one occasion you guys have resorted to insults to drive home your point. I'm done with this topic. I'll see you on one of the other threads I'm sure and we can debate (or agree) on things I actually care about. But I think it's time I give up and bow to you, because obviously I'm not allowed to have my own opinion on *this* matter. I'll just leave this here.
:? !@#$ ~_~ ~z~

[Edit by zoothe on [TIME]1081382472[/TIME]]

WEAK NPC's..
LMAO, and he thinks other RPG npc's are more powerful?!
Every RPG has weak and strong chars..

HAHA! First i don't hate PSO. Second I didn't say anything about other games NPC's. And third, the point was how weak they made the NPC's. Would a level 160 FOmarl have a level 1 barta. No.

I came on here voicing my opinion (or complaints) about the game.

You don't get it, do you? This is not the place to bash the game based on limited play. This is the Phantasy Star Online forum, where we discuss about the game we love.

And what's with name calling anyways? On more than one occasion you guys have resorted to insults to drive home your point.

Name-calling? Apart maybe from "egotistical"(which I didn't mean to insult with), I haven't called you names.

It's just funny that you continue to drag this on.

You do know that that's what they all say when they don't know what to say anymore and try to offend the opposition, don't you? #)
