Beware when buying games off eBay!

Postby Rika » Thu Mar 31, 2005 12:41 am

I had a veeeeery bad experience on eBay... seriously folks -- I got ripped off! Grrrrrr, I'm so ticked. Anyway, I just want to warn people when they choose to buy video games off eBay... I bought a sega Genesis system from some crooksl, and it didn't even work! So, be careful when on eBay, some people are dishonest! :@

Did it say "Working" or sold as-is?
Show me the auction link if its still active......I usually have bitchin' luck on ebay!...
If it says as-is they probably dont even know if it works, ......or it got really gimped on the ship to your house, had that happen to me with an NES game, but I fixed it (cart got smashed around, .......took apart, realigned, put together, worked)
if you want a sega system. try www.videogameconnection.com its a local store right by my house theyre gods of retro game systems., it's sweet and you can buy off their site!

Yeah, it takes time to research the recurring sellers to see which are honest. But heck, file a complaint. Most of the time you file, Ebay will do something about it. (I got an ebay store banned when they shafted me a pile of DVDs. Even if they log on under a different user name, all their old feedback and trust history is gone with old account.......MWA HA HA HA HA!!!)

The sellers said that it was in "great condition", I believe. It's no longer listed, but I wanted to warn everyone anyway. I 've been wanting to buy something else on eBay but since that incident, I'm afraid to. And of course when I gave them negative feedback, they retaliated.

Did you verify the bidder's rating first? Those with only a couple of negative feedbacks out of 3000 bids may be only accidents, but those with any number higher than that I consider highly unreliable.

Rika, file a complaint. You have every right to.
On eBay, carefully read the descriptions. Pay attention to if they have been bothered to making a good description, good lay-out and no typos. Check their history. If they have one or more negatives, look them up, and see what the reason of the negative feedback was. It can say a lot about the seller! Just because a seller has a lot of positive feedback doesn't mean he doesn't sell copies or other bad stuff.

Hm, I personally dislike Ebay. Too many crooks and dishonest people selling wares that sometimes don't work. There is always a catch. And really, how much can Ebay do? Delete an account? Big deal... you still get conned out of your money and whatever you were buying.
Personally, I will stick to amazon.com. I've never been conned and I order regularly. And the great deals are always a plus.

You do realize that that's stereotyping, don't you LaconianShot?
Many people have bought on eBay with no problems.
It's the only place to find certain (sometimes rare) stuff.
You're missing out.

I'm sure he's fully aware of what he's saying. I am of the same mind for certain websites. It is difficult enough to trust people these days, but it's tenfold more difficult to trust an internet site, despite all the 'securties' that are guaranteed.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I think I should have come here first before placing the bid. I can be a bit naive at times, even though these sellers had 100 percent feedback. Benoit makes an excellent point -- you never know who is going to essentially, rip you off.

No, Benoit, I know what I'm saying. Taking the risk of getting conned isn't worth the "rare" things you can get on Ebay. Pawn shops have "rare" things in them too, but at least you can see the guy who's conning you. With a thing like the internet, which is hard for the law to touch, let alone be concerned with, I don't gamble my money.

I hear what your saying, Laconian Shot, and those very reasons are what intimidates me from going back to eBay. I now have a negative feedback that was in total retaliation from when I gave them the negative feedback that they deserved, and I feel very cheated. I'm actually afraid to go back to eBay, because it's true that there's crooks on there and you never know who might rip you off. But at the same time, eBay does have the rare stuff you can't find in stores. Sigh. I hate crooks.

But that's exactly why you get educated and look at the seller's history and item description. Then there's no risk involved. Look at me, I have a 100% success rate, and I have bought about 10+ items off eBay with no problems at all.

I've bought around 50+ items off ebay, and never been conned once in the sense of sending my money and getting nothing back in return or damaged goods that I wasn't compensated for. Like Benoit said (I'm agreeing with Benoit? O_O;), you simply need to read the seller's history, check the item description and use common sense (i.e., you're not going to get a 1995 RX-7 TT off ebay for $10 :P).
Sorry for the bad experience though, report it to ebay, they may reimburse you.
-Corey
P.S. - If you used a credit card, as I did, you also can contest the charge with your CC company.
[Edit by PSP on [TIME]1112367256[/TIME]]
