That's something we could also do. You are right, there is a lot more in this one. Even if he only has the time to look at what I come up with and make suggestions to make it better, I think it would be great! I'm just glad we don't have to make concessions in length for this game. Making those choices was tough. So, whaddya say, Paul? ;-)

Kyence I love your Translation. It's perfect as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully you will get help with PSG2. You have done something truly amazing!
I'm really enjoying this game and just recently two friends of mine have started playing and they're also loving your work. Thank you so much :D

Thanks, TheSegaDude! I'm glad so many people are enjoying the game and my translation. I would be happy to learn how to translate and edit games better; I never did either of those things before G1. ROM hackers and game translators that have been doing this for years are people I'd like to learn and get help from, if they consider me a worthy student, of course :D

Try to search the Phantasy Star communities on Facebook, for starters. It's the best I can recommend you...

Chin up. Stay the course. I know that you and the rest of the team that will contribute to the PSG2 translation will put forth a great product and, for those that think they can create a better translation, you have given them the tools to do so. Simple as that. Cheers.

Thank you so much for translating this game! I've been waiting years to play it, but couldn't really get into it due to the language barrier.

In case anyone else encounters this problem, I had issues with the party's sprites becoming corrupted after battles while playing from my hard drive via OPL 0.8 and 0.9.1, but it seems to work just fine when played from a CD-R on a real PS2. It doesn't seem to be related to the patch though, even the unpatched version did this.

Hi Kyence. Thanks for handling my criticism so gracefully. Not many people can do that so well -- especially not on the Internet. :)

I'm a busy guy (I'm trying to finish translating Rent A Hero while being a college professor IRL), but I'd be happy to help out with the PSG2 translation wherever I can. You've made this project your own, so I don't think it'd be right of me to take it over from you anway. If you get stuck on any parts or doubt something you've translated, just send the text my way via PM and I'll see what I can do.

Also, if you haven't already, you might want to join Romhacking.net and post about your project in the Personal Projects section of the forum. There are a lot of great hackers and translators there who might offer to help out, too. Plus, like at PSCave, a lot of people will post just to cheer you on, which always helps.

Also, thanks for re-sparking my interest in the PS series. :)

Good luck.

Hey Paul! You're translating Rent A Hero?! That's great. I've heard really good things about that game but there is no way a non-Japanese speaker could play it.
I also hear that Rent A Hero uses the Phantasy Star 2 game engine. Does anyone know if that's true? Sounds like it might be a pretty big game!
Do you have a site or some place were we can follow your progress? I'd love to try it out as soon as you've completed it.

So excited to see this if finally done!!!!!!!!! I am so pumped and cannot wait to play it. My question is, has anyone been able to play this on a US PS2? If so, how?

Thanks so much for this. I can't wait to play :)

I figured it out. I thought I would share the wealth.

http://theisozone.com/tutorials/ps2/gen ... -with-esr/

Keep in mind. This is utilizing free mcboot memory card. Then running this through esr. For me, with the free mcboot inserted in the memory card slot, it just auto booted esr and started right up.

I hope I am not breaking any rules by posting this. If I am, I will take it down immediately.

Thanks and I hope I can help others enjoy this great effort!

Rent A Hero actually uses a modified version of the engine from Sword of Vermillion. The same team worked on both games. It's possible that the SoV engine itself was based on the PSII engine, but they feel too different to me. I think the PSIII team may have re-used some SoV code to build their engine, but I'm not totally sure. The movement of the characters when they walk around towns and the overworld looks and feels a lot like the movement of the characters in SoV and Rent A Hero, though.

I've posted some progress updates in the Personal Projects forum at romhacking.net, but not lately. The short story is that I've finished a draft and revision of the script, and now I'm in the final editing phase. Then I'll hand it off to the hackers so they can work out the kinks (too much to explain here). I don't know when it'll be ready, but it should be relatively soon.

Anyway, it's a good game (although it's pretty dated -- and hard!), but there's a lot of subtle references to other SEGA franchises in there (the main character's little sister's name is Alisa, for example), and there's also a lot of other humor in there, which I hope I've been able to carry through the translation process, so I think the SEGA fans out there will appreciate the game anyway.

Sorry if this was too OT.

Can someone please help me?

I'm playing this game and am stuck.

I've beaten the Wise Dragon, gotten the Jara Cave Key, talked to the hovercraft guy in Casba but can't find the hovercraft in Bortevo. Myau just keeps saying Lassic ruined Bortevo.

Use the walkthrough on PS Cave. Talk to every NPC you have access to, do it multiple times. Go back a bit from where you are and talk to everyone that the guide says to talk to. Don't rush, and enjoy.
If you continue to have issues, or if your issues are resolved, feel free to let us know.

Now as far as a PSG1 'retranslation' and a PSG2 translation, I'd like to say this much.
-For PSG1 retranslation, I feel these resources could be better spent helping with PSG2 first to completion, then going back and 'retranslating' if needed.
-As a non-Japanese speaker, I've noticed ZERO problems whatsoever with the content, flow, or 'completeness' of dialogue in Kyence's translation. Those who say otherwise are welcome to their opinions, just realize that if you can read Japanese than feel free to play the game in Japanese if this translation isn't suitable for you.
--The priority should be helping Kyence with PSG2 rather than nitpicking over details in PSG1. Considering the original game on the SMS (Sega Master System), the story is rounded out quite a lot! The best part has to be the 'converse' feature and the banter between party members.
Myau can be such a foul-mouthed *%#@ sometimes. And so mean to Odin >_>

I've got a YouTube channel with some (default-titled) PSG1 videos showing dialogue, boss fights, all the cutscenes, etc. Gonna get around to organizing tons of videos that I've uploaded, but for now it'll have to do. The channel is under the name 'jcdenton2k' if anyone wants to check it out. Like I've said the videos are all unorganized for the time being but I'm hoping to have everything recorded at least. I've done this because the worst part of PS1 (and the PSG remake) has to be the random battles every 3-4 steps. I mean FFS...it gets flat-out ridiculous at some points. Crystals are also absurdly overpriced to where it is easier to just completely ignore them and make do without wasting the very limited meseta on them.

You know what would be fantastic? Rather than a 'retranslation' how about an 'sane person' patch that we can apply to the ISO which triples meseta from battle, halves all prices for items (or at least those crystals), puts the +MP items in the shop (maybe in limited quantities depending on the point in the story?), and best of all, reduces random encounters to 10% of the current encounter rate. For reference, take one of the already-existing low-encounter (lol) rate areas and just apply that rate everywhere. Still way too common (about as often as old-school Dragon Warrior) but at least not insane like the current system.

There's your project, translation nitpickers. If you don't wanna help Kyence with PSG2 translating then hop to that. I've even added a video for the encounter rate so you can get a look at what I'm talking about.

I did everything the walkthrough said, although not in the same order.

Talked to Vivian, Edgar, got the Flute, heard about the Mirror Shield, heard about the gas surrounding Sopia, heard about the hovercraft junked in Bortevo...
