Dark Energy
Chapter 20
Reading the Biography I started last night, Mr. Mahlay is currently culling over the reasons behind a decision to become a student in Piata instead of starting an apprenticeship under his father as an armorer. EVERYBODY! REPORT FOR BREAKFAST!
I wonder what would happen if Dora lost her voice? I put down the book and make my way towards the cafeteria.
Grabbing a tray of what appears to be scraps of leather painted white, I couldn't help but think aloud, Thank Light I don't have to put up with this cooking much longer.
The cook slams down a pan full of green...something. Oh, yeah? If those damn ears of yours work, let me tell you that if you want to fucking cook, you're fucking welcome to!
I notice that the other people stopped talking to watch the two of us.
Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll pass. Maybe next time.
I manage to keep my temper in check this time. Practice makes perfect, I guess. I start walking towards the tables.
That's right, you dumb-shit bitch! Just walk away!
Sitting down, Etirn and the hunter both start laughing.
Ray seems particularly tickled.Just walk away!
How in the world did you not kill him right there?
I think I should order more coffee for the next dig.
Dora isn't as amused as the men.
Why is everybody yelling this morning?
The senior looks worse for wear this morning.
Etirn decides to answer Akkosua's question, Because all the alcohol disappeared? Anyway, Blades. You remember Marika?
I could see him undressing me with his eyes. A good lookin' babe standing guard in her underwear? How could I forget!
Ooh, this sounds good...
Akkosua looks over at me.
I could feel my face turn red. N-no! No story to tell!
Ray continues, Laying right next to Mr. Machine, here....
Do tell, Marika!
Even Etirn turns a little flush. It's not what you're thinking...
I admit, even I'm curious about this.
Even Dora wants to know about my mistake?
I don't wish to discuss this...
I was getting uncomfortable.
HEY, let's direct our attention to the task at hand.
Etirn knocks his weapon on the table like a gavel to add emphasis. Akkosua snorts at the change of subject. We are to enter the facility. Dora's men will guard the entry. We will make our way to those monster makers and knock one over, to break the dome portion. From there, I will disassemble it, and you four will watch my back. Once I have all we need, we evacuate the facility. With everyone safe, Dora's guys will use some dynamite they planted, and collapse the exit. It's a simple smash and grab operation, and it's a rare occurrence for these to go wrong. Any questions?
Akkosua raises her hand. What exactly were you doing with Marika last night?
I notice anger show on his face, for an instant. We just talked, okay? Finish eating, and grab your combat gear. We go in half an hour.
Etirn got up and walked off, with urgency in his step.
Akkosua shrugged at me. What crawled up his ass? There's nothing wrong with getting laid. Heck, I can think of a dozen guys who would've wanted to be the first to score with a girl as hot as you.
I shake my head. You guys are misinterpreting the situation. I simply couldn't sleep, and we talked a little bit. Not everything has to be gossip material. I'm gonna get ready.
I get up, and head into town. After an intense session of bargaining, I surrender most of my life's savings for a sheer suit comprised of carbon fibers to help stop whatever pierces my jacket, and a small collection of field medicines, primarily Monomate and Antidote; I'm not about to repeat yesterday's mistakes. I put the suit on under my clothes in the fitment room, and rush back to the tunnel in time to meet up with everyone.
