Reputation does have a lot to do with it. It's so strong that gaming is now directly associated with PlayStation in most people's minds.

...which we can attribute to the success of the PS2. While very successful, at the launch of the Playstation 2, Sony had no where near the reputation in the video game business that Nintendo did. It was very much still the little guy, in comparison to Nintendo's successful history.

While Metroid has a big following now, it didn't before Metroid Prime.

I disagree completely. It had quite the cult following. It was hyped before the release of Metroid Prime a great deal, as well.

Legend of Zelda has a big following since the early days. But still not enough to make it as worthwhile as Final Fantasy, because many didn't own a NES or SNES before they owned a PSX. It's not as mainstream.

Yes, it is. Many people followed and played the legend that was A Link to the Past, and then both hugely popular N64 games.
The point I'm trying to make here is that collectively, Nintendo has generated as much hype as Sony has, or it is at the very least within the ballpark.
I feel you're diluting the issue; Nintendo's lack of third-party developing, as well as their lack of focus ("connectivity" in favor of online) and their obsession with innovation (which is terribly misguided) is the reason for their downfall, not the hype that Sony has generated.
I don't know if what I'm assuming is correct, but you seem to dislike the idea that Nintendo has let down its fans, that it has made some decisions that are downright ridiculous, and that ultimately Nintendo's failure has one set of shoulders to lay the blame on: itself.
If you can find some other plausible reason, please correct me.
