Because it's simply a matter of literacy? It's not like the box is completely black with no text, it quite plainly explains the purpose of the game as well as the reasons for the rating (which is pretty prominent on the box). Not to mention, you can ask a salesperson and they'll gladly explain if the game is appropriate or not for a certain age, mainly because if they lie they'll lose their job when the parent comes back and complains :P

Hm. I've got the box in my hand right now. let's see... There's... a helicopter, a man with a bandana covering his face with part of what COULD be a gun, A street sign, a woman licking her lips, a man on a bike, some dude with wide eyes, poker chips, A public trolley, A man sitting on a car hood, and.. Oh, there it is! Men with guns sitting in a car. But it's covered by the M for Mature rating symbol and the PC DVD-ROM sign. It doesn't even imply they're shooting AT anything in particular. A parent would look at that box and see it's got some guns, but so do most games, right? And I'd bet 99.9% of buyers won't even read the back.

Then that is your mother's fault, not mine or anyone else's. I'm 21, and I've been playing 'Mature' games since...age 8? I was taught the difference between right and wrong, reality and fiction, and such things never had any adverse effect of me. I hope the same can be said of you, personally.
In the end, age is nothing. I've known plenty of 'children' who acted like adults and vice-versa. The fact that I've played such games for years doesn't mean I'm gonna pull my 9mm on the street and open fire. If you're not mature enough to handle such content, then your mother should exercise her ability to read and deny you the game. If you are mature enough, who cares what your age is? I sure as hell don't.
People need to grow up. There's so much wrong in the world and here we are having debates over video games. Jeez, if you don't like them, DON'T BUY THEM. It's pretty damned simple if you ask me.

Exactly. I've met some dumb-as-**** people in my short lifetime, but none stupid enough to imitate or interpret this as appropriate behavior. Nor have I seen anybody shoot eachother for money, or get it on with random women. People don't play the game because they love to shoot humans, they play it because it's fun... Not shooting humans, that is.
And you're 100% right about what's wrong in the world. What a stupid video game contains shouldn't be the highlight of our News, be it television or internet, anywhere in the world.
It's up to parents to become more knowledgable of what their children are playing, to explain that what they're playing isn't appropriate behavior, and to make sure they understand that.
But I digress, and I tend to ramble on an empty stomach. Shmee out.
[Edit by gbrooks on [TIME]1123005069[/TIME]]
[Edit by gbrooks on [TIME]1123005139[/TIME]]

[Edit by gbrooks on [TIME]1123010673[/TIME]]

You're 100%... misinformed. Where do you get off thinking that EVERY parent that buys their kids a game knows what it's about?
Go go gadget reading comprehension!
Jump to conclusions much? Feel free to show me the part of my post that stated that every parent pays attention to what their kids are playing. Hint: it doesn't exist, even in implied form, because it's completely irrelevant.

Yawn Yawn... I can't beleive you guys have the energy to keep this up.
Edit: Said something that some people might find offensive (and I also realised that it wouldn't feed the discussion) so I descided to hold my piece ;)

[Edit by DaveGeorge on [TIME]1123017801[/TIME]]

Funny thing is that it was originally released with an M rating (17 and older), so upping the rating to adult (18 here in Canada) makes absolutely no difference. All the hype over 1 year, big deal. Besides, I bet you can do download nude skins off some site, same thing. And Khyron, you talk about your young kids playing the game...7 or 11 year old child couldn't buy the game as is (M rating), and if they could get their hands on it before, they sure can now.

Goddamnit, I've been saying that all along, though not in so few words. :P
EDIT: Refering to PSP's comment (referring to GBrooks's above it), not GBrooks' "close this" comment.
(slightly edited for clarity.)
Same here.
Oh, and Tekno-Crystal, I think you forgot an " 't " near the end of your post.

We've all been watching cartoons, playing games, or reading books, about violence, but do you really ever see anybody imitate it?

Sometimes, that IS the case, but not normally. Besides, most "violent content" per se is that comic mischief found in Warner Bros. cartoons.
However, is killing someone as in something like GTA acceptable? Not really, as it EVENTUALLY WILL turn into a bit of a catharsis (though the point at which it does obviously differs from person to person). Besides, there are plenty of ways to make a game fun other than put as much offensive content as possible. The Guy Game was a really crappy game, as noted in multiple reviews, while a nice RPG of your choice (say, Pokemon [*shot*]) may do nicely. In fact, games like GTA are probably crappy games whose only selling point, as I mentioned before, is shock value anyway.

Hmmmmm.... time for HuBBs' two cents theatre.
Its rockstar's fault for leaving it in.
It the hackers fault for bringing it out.
its the parent's fault(a select few mind you) for not giving a shit as to what their kids are playing.
The result:
Rockstar left garbage in that the hacker then brought out, which now brings cointroversy to rockstar for their stupidity. End result, GTA:SA is now being pulled from selves and lots of money is going down the tube.
And kids who shouldn't be exposed to a game of GTA's caliber will catch wind of the hot coffee thingy and maybe download the mod. I'm happy my folks wouldn't let me play a game like mortal kombat or street fighter or even doom until like 94/95 when they felt I was now able to tell the difference between reality and games. And I don't blame them one bit.

And if I were to rate where the guilt should fall, it would be on the following groups:
Parents, primary, apparently not concerned enough for their kids that they buy the item without thinking about the content of the game.
Hackers, secondary, since the content would have othewise not been distributed (illegally, though Rockstar presumably won't press charges) or discovered.
Rockstar...hmmm...now companies can get hurt for what they DON'T put in a game! Since the content cannot otherwise be accessed on the game, what makes it so much more different from any other mod, which wouldn't change the rating of the game itself.

[Edit by Muuuu teki on [TIME]1123122534[/TIME]]
