Chapter 12

We arrive at Mile in the middle of the night. I had heard of the town since people from Kadary pass through here, but it didn't look like any town I had ever visited. Actually, it looked like a ghost town. All the buildings are quite run down, like they've been abandoned long ago. A solitary house just outside the southern fence appeared occupied. In the distance, the rolling waves of some liquified quicksand frame the northern part of town, further emphasizing the solitude of this place. Etirn, what's up with this town?

I don't know the whole story. Basically, everybody died, and only one family lives here now. They make their living by tending sand rafts from Kadary, and trading Sandworm Leathers from further east. Here, I'll introduce you to them. We all walked up to the lit house, and Etirn knocked on the door.

An elderly man answered. Hello?

Hi, we were in the neighborhood, and I got curious- what happened to the town here?

The elderly man looks us over. Come on in. The man opened the door and lead us to a large dining room. Motioning us to sit down, he passed some wine around, which Akkosua quickly helped herself to. This place is the ruins of Mile. A long time ago, when the University was still exclusively of Piata, a large hole appeared southwest of this town. Everybody in town died for some reason, which I still don't understand.

There seems to be a collection of family pictures throughout the house. I decide to ask, If everybody died, how did your family get here?

At the time, the son of one of the farmers here was attending Piata Academy. Eventually, the hole disappeared, only leaving burn marks on the ground. That person dropped out, and came here. To remember all who lived here, he built a house just outside the village and my family's been here ever since. It's always been quiet out here, even after Kadary rerouted its caravans through here instead of Aiedo. Feel free to stay here for the night if you desire. I rarely get to talk to anybody most days. The old man got up and walked off into his bedroom and closed the door.

Well, we don't have to pitch a tent tonight. Let's get some rest. Etirn says as he takes off his machines and lays down on the floor by the kitchen. We take his cue, and in the morning continue Northeast to Zema.
